Surge in House Construction and Renovations Bolster Antimicrobial Coating Market Growth

According to our latest study on "Antimicrobial Coating Market Forecast to 2031, Global and Regional Growth Opportunity Analysis – by Material and Application," the market was valued at US$ 7.64 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach US$ 15.98 billion by 2031; it is estimated to register a CAGR of 11.1% during 2025–2031. The report highlights key factors contributing to the growing antimicrobial coating market size and prominent players, along with their developments in the market.

The total construction spending in the US accounted for US$ 740.8 billion during the first five months of 2023, according to the US Census Bureau. The investment was spent on the development of offices, commercial spaces, transportation, highways, and streets. The spending on private and public construction was US$ 585.7 billion and US$ 133.8 billion, respectively, during the first five months of 2023. According to the US Census Bureau, in November 2023, the number of privately owned houses (at a seasonally adjusted annual rate) was reported as 1.56 million units, a rise of 9.3% compared to 1.43 million units in November 2022. In February 2023, China launched an inbound investment program, the Qualified Foreign Limited Partnership (QFLP), which involved at least US$ 4.37 million of fundraising in its first round. The scheme is aimed at investing in residential and commercial housing projects. During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025) period, China plans to allocate 6.5 million government-subsidized rental homes in 40 key cities to assist ~13 million people in need of affordable housing. Nearly 219,000 old residential communities constructed in urban areas before the end of 2000 will most likely be renovated by 2025 to provide more housing. According to the European Construction Industry Federation, the investment in nonresidential construction in France was estimated at US$ 58.49 billion in 2022. In 2023, DEEM Enterprises LLC announced its plans to spend US$ 2.7 billion to build a Formula 1-style racetrack, housing, and shopping complex on the site of a former airport in New Jersey, the US. The rise in residential as well as commercial construction activities in various countries across the globe is fueling the demand for different construction products and materials, including antimicrobial coating. These coatings are commonly used on interior finishes, bathroom fixtures, restrooms, building exteriors, furniture, and fixtures, as well as high-traffic areas, to eliminate existing microorganisms and prevent new ones from populating. Thus, the strong growth of the building and construction industry fuels the antimicrobial coating market growth.

Antimicrobial Coating Market Size and Forecast (2021 - 2031), Global and Regional Share, Trend, and Growth Opportunity Analysis Report Coverage: By Material (Silver, Copper, Titanium Dioxide, and Others), Application (Healthcare, HVAC, Mold Remediation, Building and Construction, Food and Beverages, and Others), and Geography

The antimicrobial coating market analysis has been performed by considering the following segments: material and application. In terms of material, the market is segmented into silver, copper, titanium dioxide, and others. The silver segment held the largest antimicrobial coating market share in 2024. Silver has antimicrobial properties that protect the material from bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Silver consists of positively charged ions (Ag+) that neutralize microorganisms. Most silver antimicrobial coating contains three components: silver zeolite, silver ions, and an ion exchange. The ion exchange is responsible for releasing the silver ions into the surrounding environment. The silver zeolite allows for the release of silver ions in moist and humid environments. As humidity and moisture increase, more silver ions will be released, which can protect the material from humidity and moisture that typically encourage microbial growth.

The antimicrobial coating market trends include the development of sustainable and eco-friendly antimicrobial coating. Concerns about environmental sustainability have significantly impacted various industries across the globe. Strict environmental regulations and consumer preference toward eco-friendly products are leading to the development of bio-based and environmental-friendly coatings. With increasing environmental awareness, there is an increasing demand for the development of sustainable and eco-friendly antimicrobial coating to provide effective antimicrobial protection with reduced environmental footprints.

North America dominated the antimicrobial coating market share in terms of revenue in 2024. The antimicrobial coating market in North America is experiencing significant growth, driven by increasing awareness of hygiene and infection control across various industries. The healthcare sector remains a key driver of the antimicrobial coating market in North America, as hospitals and medical facilities increasingly adopt these coatings to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). According to the American Hospital Association (AHA), health spending in the US increased by 4.1% in 2022 to US$ 4.5 trillion or US$ 13,493 per capita. HAIs pose a significant challenge in medical facilities, leading to prolonged hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and severe health complications. The healthcare industry is one of the leading end-users of antimicrobial coating in North America. Hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities are increasingly adopting these coatings to reduce the risk of HAIs and enhance patient safety. Antimicrobial coatings are applied to medical devices, surgical tools, hospital beds, door handles, and high-touch surfaces to prevent microbial contamination. Governments of various countries in North America have been actively promoting infection control measures, driving the demand for antimicrobial solutions. Additionally, the country's aging population has led to increased hospital visits and long-term care needs, accelerating the adoption of antimicrobial coating in a medical environment. Continuous economic growth and rise in population due to high immigration highlight the need for infrastructure and housing facilities in North America. Further, the construction industry is witnessing a growing adoption of antimicrobial coating. With urbanization and rising concerns over indoor air quality, builders and architects are incorporating antimicrobial coating in paints, HVAC systems, and flooring materials to inhibit mold and bacterial growth. These coatings improve the durability of building materials and contribute to a healthier indoor environment. The growing trend of smart and sustainable buildings has propelled the demand for antimicrobial coating in residential and commercial spaces.

Cupron Inc, ALISTAGEN Corp, Fiberlock Technologies, The Sherwin-Williams Co, PPG Industries Inc, Akzo Nobel NV, CytaCoat AB, Nano-Care Deutschland AG, and Specialty Coating Systems Inc are among the prominent players profiled in the antimicrobial coating market report. These market players are focusing on providing high-quality products to fulfill customer demand.
