Growing Use of Satellite Data Services in Urban Planning to Fuel Satellite Data Services Market Growth During Forecast Period

According to our latest study, "Satellite Data Services Market Size and Forecast (2021–2031), Global and Regional Share, Trend, and Growth Opportunity Analysis – by Services, End User Vertical, and Geography," the market was valued at US$ 10.49 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach US$ 24.55 billion by 2031; it is estimated to register a CAGR of 16.2% during 2025–2031. The report includes growth prospects owing to the current satellite data services market trends and their foreseeable impact during the forecast period.

The rapid development and growth of urban areas are increasing pressure on the environment, particularly green spaces and urban parks. Green spaces, such as streetscapes, lawns, public park areas, gardens, crops, and forests, are required to improve urban environments and give a better quality of life for residents. Satellite image data provides detailed analysis for creating or updating geographic information system (GIS) maps, detecting significant changes in urban land cover and land use, and allowing for frequent coverage and overlaying of different environmentally safe and sustainable areas for urban development. High-resolution stereo satellite sensors, such as GeoEye-1, Pleiades Neo satellite constellation, WorldView-2, WorldView-3, and WorldView-4, can give a wide range of geospatial data for vegetation and green space study, allowing for the construction of sustainable cities. For instance, in late 2023, Hungarian architectural firm Paulinyi & Partners signed a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) to participate in the "Space for Green Construction" program. This program helps Hungarian scientists analyze urban microclimate using Earth observation (EO) data from satellites and create methods to lessen the urban heat island (UHI) effect. The program also increases awareness of the benefits of using advanced satellite technologies to discover patterns and solutions that can improve urban sustainability while addressing growing concerns about climate change and environmental damage. Growing environmental concerns, such as urban heat management to make informed decisions for tackling environmental concerns. Hence, the demand for high-resolution data for urban planning propels the satellite data services market growth.

Airbus SE; Maxar Technologies Holdings Inc; L3Harris Technologies Inc; ICEYE Oy; Imagesat International (I.S.I) Ltd.; LAND INFO Worldwide Mapping, LLC; Planet Labs PBC; Satellite Imaging Corp; SATPALDA; Ursa Space Systems Inc; Earth-i Ltd, and Ceinsys Tech Ltd are among the key players profiled in the satellite data services market report. Several other major players were also studied and analyzed in the market study to get a holistic view of the market and its ecosystem.

The report includes the satellite data services market forecast by services and end use vertical. The image data segment is further divided into spatial, spectral, radiometric, and temporal. The data analytics segment is sub segmented into image data processing, digital models, feature extraction, and classification. In terms of revenue, the spatial segment held the largest satellite data services market share in 2024.

The scope of the satellite data services market report focuses on North America (the US, Canada, and Mexico), Europe (Spain, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and the Rest of Europe), Asia Pacific (South Korea, China, India, Japan, Australia, and the Rest of Asia Pacific), the Middle East & Africa (South Africa, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the Rest of Middle East & Africa), and South & Central America (Brazil, Argentina, and the Rest of South & Central America). North America dominated the market in 2024, followed by Europe and APAC.

The market in Asia Pacific is segmented into Australia, China, Japan, India, South Korea, and the Rest of APAC. In terms of revenue, China held the largest satellite data services market share in APAC. The expansion of China's satellite services and its growing role in global satellite data provision is a major factor driving the market. Chinese space companies are enhancing their commercial offerings, including remote sensing services through satellites. In January 2025, China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC), which offers commercial launch and satellite in-orbit delivery services, completed the delivery of an intelligent remote sensing satellite, known as IRSS-1, to an Omani company. The successful launch and delivery of the IRSS-1 satellite to Oman illustrates China's growing involvement in providing high-resolution satellite imagery and data services to international clients. This satellite's application in land and forest surveys, urban planning, and disaster monitoring is a testament to the utility and versatility of China's satellite data services.

In April 2024, China continued constructing a commercial constellation of remote sensing satellites with the launch of the SuperView-3 (01) satellite. This is China's first commercial optical remote sensing satellite that is designed to provide 0.5-meter resolution and 9-band combined image data products. The satellite will provide commercial remote sensing data services to support digital agriculture, urban modeling, and live 3D mapping, among other applications. Overall, this launch contributes to China's expanding influence in satellite data services, offering high-quality imagery for sectors that rely on precision data for planning, monitoring, and decision-making.
