Female Segment to Hold Largest Share of Silicone Based Catheters Market During 2021–2028

According to our new research study on “Silicone Based Catheters Market Forecast to 2028 – COVID-19 Impact and Global Analysis – by Application, Usage, Tip, Product Type, Type, and End User,” the market is projected to reach US$ 240.905 million by 2028 from US$ 150.866 million in 2021; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.9% from 2021 to 2028. The market growth is attributed to the growing prevalence of urinary incontinence and the increasing number of surgical procedures.

North America held the largest share in the silicone based catheters market. The growth of the market in the US and Canada is driven by factors such as favorable reimbursement policies for catheterization, rapid increase in the utilization of silicone based catheters for hospitalized patients, and rise in focus on new product launches by industry players.

100% All-Silicone 2-Way Foley Catheter with 10ml integral balloon for female produced by manufacturers have a flexible tip to aid insertion. The catheter is recommended to use for up to 90 days. It is x-ray detectable in nature and suitable for urethral and suprapubic use.

Increasing Number of Surgical Procedures Fuels Silicone Based Catheters Market Growth

The incidence of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), cancer, stroke, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, and kidney diseases, is increasing across the world. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality and result in the deaths of ~17.9 million people every year globally. Moreover, according to the International Diabetes Federation's Diabetes Atlas 9th edition 2019, ~463 million adults aged 20–79 years had diabetes in 2019, and the number is projected to reach 700 million by 2045. Also, according to the data published by the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of India in 2020, the number of bariatric surgeries increased by ~86.7% in India during 2014–2018. In addition, as per the study published by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, in 2019, ~252,000 weight loss surgeries were performed in the US.

In recent years, there have been considerable developments in the field of medicine. The high prevalence of chronic conditions increases the number of surgical procedures, which propels the demand for urinary catheterization. Silicone based catheters are used to keep the bladder empty during and after the surgical procedure. In urological surgery or other surgery on contiguous structures of the genitourinary tract, the prolonged duration of the surgery, usage of large-volume infusions or diuretics during surgery, and need for monitoring of intraoperative urinary output are the major factors increasing the demand for silicone based catheters.

According to a report published by the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery (2015), ~28–32% of the disease burden can be attributed to surgically treatable conditions globally, and 143 million additional surgical procedures are required to reduce mortality every year. The increasing awareness of the patient population is also driving the demand for surgical procedures to treat sudden unmet medical conditions, which is expected to propel the growth of the silicone based catheters market in the coming years.

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Silicone Based Catheters Market

COVID-19 pandemic had a significant negative impact on the silicone based catheters market. Before the pandemic, the rate of hospitalization was continuously growing, propelling the growth of catheterization. The rising number of urological procedures and other conditions that require catheterization supports the silicone-based catheters market. For instance, as published by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the volume of ambulatory surgeries performed at United States community hospitals was 19.2 million surgeries in 2018. The top 20 major ambulatory surgery categories constituted 10.0 million surgeries (64% of all major ambulatory surgeries) and accounted for 8.1 million major ambulatory surgery encounters. The above number indicated the high demand for Foley catheters that were being used during such surgical procedures. The pandemic situation has reduced the number of surgeries in hospitals or the doctors have postponed the surgeries. In such a context, the usage of silicone based catheters were used less and thus, the demand decreased considerably during the COVID-19 crisis. However, the COVID-19 outbreak prompted institutions and governing bodies to postpone and/or cancel nonessential surgeries and procedures, which impacted unfavorably the overall healthcare system. As the number of surgeries, diagnosis, and treatment were postponed during pandemic, the silicone based catheters market was highly hampered. However, during the pandemic, self-catheterization was promoted and supported patient’s conditions in home care settings.

The healthcare system has again took running pace. The surgical procedures that were postponed during the outbreak are now taking place, posing high demand for catheterization and opening lucrative opportunities to gain the market share with innovative products. Thus, the overall COVID-19 pandemic impact on the global silicone-based catheter market is negative but the market has started to gain traction and is expected to grow in the coming years.

Teleflex Incorporated, B. Braun Melsungen AG, ConvaTec Group Plc., Ribbel International Limited, Bactiguard, BD, Cook Medical LLC, Angiplast, Sterimed Group, Mais India, and Medasil Surgical Limited are among the leading companies operating in the silicone based catheters market.
