Defibrillation is a treatment procedure for life-threatening cardiac dysrhythmias, specifically ventricular fibrillation (VF) and non-perfusing ventricular tachycardia (VT). A defibrillator passes a dose of electric current (often called a counter-shock) to the heart. The connection between the defibrillator and the patient consists of a pair of electrodes known as defibrillation electrodes, each provided with electrically conductive gel to ensure a good connection and minimize electrical resistance called chest impedance (despite the DC discharge), which would burn the patient. Defibrillator pads are used to reduce transthoracic impedance when paddles are applied directly to the chest wall to deliver a shock. Defibrillator pads are available for both children and adults.
