A keratometer is a device that measures the curvature of the eye's anterior corneal surface. When there is a vision problem, the cornea's curvature is measured. Ophthalmometer is another name for it. Keratometers have become increasingly important in the evaluation of keratoconus patients, contact lens fitting, and the resolution of intraocular lens implant power for cataract surgery patients. The keratometer instrument produces two corneal curvature values that are 90 degrees apart (minimum and maximum). The size of an image reflected from the two-paracentral locations on the cornea is measured by the Keratometer. The equipment uses doubling prisms to stabilize an image and hence provide accurate focusing. Single-position Helmholtz keratometers and double-position Javal-Schiotz keratometers are the two main types of keratometers. The single-position Helmholtz keratometers are the most common and alter the picture size simply, whereas the Helmholtz keratometers adjust the object size.
